Sony State of Play: when is the next PlayStation event and what to expect?

Given we had two Sony State of Play events in quick succession in early 2024 - one in late January and one in early February - we might be in for a little wait before the next one comes along.

Since the series of shows began in 2019, Sony has used the State of Play presentations to reveal big-hitting games and details such as The Last of Us 2 release date, debut gameplay footage for Ghost of Tsushima, and more. So, it's always worth tuning in to the State of Play live streams if you want to be alerted to any big announcements for new PS5 games.

The last State of Play aired on February 6, 2024, and was dedicated to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. A week before that we had a more 'traditional' State of Play' presentation covering many games such as Death Stranding 2, Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, Silent Hill 2 Remake, and more.

Anyway, with the recent shows in mind, and nothing confirmed officially, here's when we think the next Sony State of Play event for Showcase might happen.

There is no set date for the next Sony State of Play event. Our current thinking is that it could be in late spring or early summer, and could take the form of a Showcase (a larger show). Note that this is some guesswork and is based on looking at 2023's pattern for any clues.

What can we expect from the next Sony State of Play?

Assuming the next State of Play (or Showcase) comes in late spring, it might be geared toward games coming out much later in the year or even 2025. Could we see more of Marvel's Wolverine? Or maybe info on third-party games like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Star Wars Outlaws, or Still Wakes the Deep. Aside from that, there are a lot of multiplayer titles like Marathon on their way that we still know very little about.

The last State of Play was on February 6, 2024, and was dedicated to a deep dive and look ahead to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

Just before then, we had another State of Play on January 31, 2024. This confirmed the name of the Death Stranding series as Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. We also heard that Hideo Kojima is going to be working on a new stealth action game with Sony. Elsewhere there were deep dives on Rise of Ronin and Stellar Blade, the reveal of a PS5 and PC version of Until Dawn, the announcement of Sonic x Shadow Generations, and a look at Silent Hill 2 Remake (as well as news of a free to play spin-off, Silent Hill: The Short Message that was immediately available), and Ken Levine's Judas.

You can head to the PS Blog for a full round-up of what was shown in those recent shows. Missed the action live? We've embedded the videos of both showcases below so you can catch up on everything you missed.

That's all we have on the next potential Sony State of Play event. For more on PlayStation, here's a list of the best PS5 games as well as the upcoming games set to release in 2024 and beyond. For PlayStation exclusives specifically, visit our upcoming PS5 exclusives.
