Oppo’s MWC presence features a strong push for 5G

MWC may be all about the latest phones, but Oppo has been quietly making some remarkable strides towards pushing for 5G adoption across the globe.

The company has been investing in 5G technology since 2015, and is set to launch its first 5G-capable smartphone later this year. Oppo stresses that 5G would be a significant connectivity boost for the market, bringing with it increased speeds for 4k video streaming as well as faster data download speeds.

To demonstrate this, the company had set up a brief 5G demonstration at MWC on a 5G-enabled Oppo smartphone. The phone was playing an Android version of Soul Calibur VI - developed in partnership with Shadow, a high-performance cloud gaming company - against an opponent based in the Netherlands. While this sort of game would normally be relegated to being playable only over WiFi, the 5G performance meant that there was nearly zero lag in the game or the commands given.

Oppo also identified other usage scenarios for 5G, such as AR applications for shopping, gaming, conferencing, and more.

Patent license agreement with Ericsson

In a continuing bid to further its research and development, Oppo also recently announced a multi-year global patent license agreement, including collaboration on a number of business projects. It marks the latest in a series of patent license agreements by OPPO with key telecommunication industry partners including Qualcomm, Dolby and Nokia.

Adler Feng, Head of OPPO Intellectual Property Department, said that the agreement will lay a solid foundation for further cooperation between the two companies in the 5G era. “OPPO has always placed intellectual property rights as our top priority. We look forward to working with Ericsson to drive cutting-edge innovation in products and services.”
