In a first-of-its-kind launch for the streaming service, Netflix will be releasing a mobile game and a new animated series based on the popular card game Exploding Kittens. The game will launch in May and a new adult animated series will debut in 2023 featuring the voices of Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Abraham Lim (The Boys), Lucy Liu (Elementary), Ally Maki (Toy Story 4), Mark Proksch (Better Call Saul) and Sasheer Zamata (Home Economics).

The launch of the game expands Netflix’s venture into mobile gaming that started last year and aimed to reel in more subscribers who are looking for more than just to binge-watch their favourite TV show.

In the series, the never-ending conflict between Heaven and Hell is tested when both God and the Devil are sent to Earth in the body of chubby house cats. The mobile game of Exploding Kittens will retain the card game's mechanics where players draw cards to avoid the Exploding Kitten. The game will feature two new cards, Radar and Flip Flop, each with its own unique abilities that players can use to their advantage.

“The co-development of a game and animated series breaks new ground for Netflix,” said Mike Moon, Netflix Head of Adult Animation. “And we couldn’t think of a better game to build a universe around than Exploding Kittens, one of the most inventive, iconic and original games of this century! Netflix is the perfect place to explore this growing franchise, and we are so fortunate to be working with this incredible team!”

Originally launched as a Kickstarter project, Exploding Kittens found success from loyal fans, making it a popular card game in the past years. Exploding Kittens – The Game and Exploding Kittens – The Series will be available to all Netflix subscribers at no extra cost.
