Horizon FCB Dubai has launched a non-profit NFT campaign to free imprisoned women in Egypt harshly sentenced for minor loan defaults.

Every year Egyptian women in needy circumstances are sent to prison by the tens of thousands for being unable to payback minor loans. The loan amounts average a few hundred dollars each and are borrowed as a last resort to pay for essentials like medical emergencies and taking care of their families.

Known simply as “Al Gharemaat” or “The Fined”, these women often face severe prison sentences that don’t match the severity of their offenses. One of these women is Rabia, who was unable to keep up with payments after she was diagnosed with breast cancer and now faces a two year prison term for not being able to pay a loan of $254 USD.

To help these women, Horizon FCB Dubai has launched a humane initiative ‘Breakchains with Blockchain’ that aims to sell NFTs to raise money to free these women from prison. Collaborating with artists around the world, Horizon will create NFTs that tell the story of the women and how they ended up in prison. The price of each NFT reflects the amount it will take to free someone.

Horizon has also partnered with Egyptian NGO, “Children of Female Prisoners Association” to raise awareness and donations around the world.
