What to watch this week: New movies and TV shows in the UAE, Jordan and Egypt

There are a lot of reasons to head to the cinema this week as three big films are being released: the horror film The Black Phone starring Ethan Hawke, the musical epic Elvis by director Baz Luhrmann, and the science-fiction horror Crimes of the Future directed by David Cronenberg.

Streaming is also loaded with titles that you shouldn’t miss. The third season of Umbrella Academy and the highly anticipated Korean version of Money Heist arrives on Netflix, while the new season of The Handmaid’s Tale streams on Starz Play and the series finale of Obi-Wan Kenobi also arrives on Disney+ this week.

The Black Phone

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson returns to his horror roots in The Black Phone. In the film, Ethan Hawke plays as a serial killer that kidnaps a young boy named Finney Shaw. Held captive inside a room with a disconnected phone, he realises that he can talk to the killer’s previous victims through it, who all want to help him escape his captor.

 Elvis

Baz Luhrmann returns with the musical epic Elvis. Based on the life of Elvis Presley, the film chronicles the crazy and scandalous career of the famed rock and roll star. Austin Butler plays the iconic singer, and Tom Hanks plays his manager Colonel Tom Parker.

Crimes of the Future

Director David Cronenberg needs no introduction, and his latest science-fiction horror film has been generating positive word of mouth since its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. It looks at the continuous progression of the human species through new mutations. Celebrity performer Saul Tenser is one such individual, but a mysterious group is planning to use Saul’s transformations in showcasing the next phase of human evolution.

The Man From Toronto

Starring Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson, this action-comedy follows Teddy, a New Yorker who has been mistaken as the “Man from Toronto.” Trying to clear his name, he unknowingly winds up with the real one when both of them check into the same Airbnb.

The Umbrella Academy

After preventing 1963’s doomsday, everyone returns home and tries to live and move on with their lives. But that happiness is short-lived as a new school, Sparrow Academy faces off with Umbrella that makes them rethink their choices while navigating new challenges and surprises.

Season 3 is releasing on Netflix on June 22nd 

Man Vs Bee

Rowan Atkinson plays Trevor, a bumbling father who gets a new job as a housesitter. On his first day at work, he gets assigned to a mansion filled with valuables. When a bee enters the place, comedic chaos ensues as Trevor tries to catch it, putting all the priceless artworks and classic cars at risk.

Man Vs Bee is streaming on Netflix on June 24th.

 Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area

Set in a fictional Joint Economic Area, this Korean remake of the popular series pits the same characters in a new setting with a new Hahoe-inspired mask. Yoo ji-tae will play the Professor, the brains behind this heist. Joining him is Park Hae-soo from Squid Game.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Set after the events of Revenge of the Sith, former Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi contends with the fall and corruption of his former apprentice Anakin Skywalker to the dark side. Skywalker, now known as the fearful Darth Vader, will scour the far reaches of the galaxy to find Obi-Wan and get his revenge.
